		<description>Polymorphic transformations (2024)

	The exhibition Polymorphic transformations explores the complex and 
deeply intertwined relationship between plants and humans, as well as 
interactions between organic and luminous substances. Featuring 
new camera-based works and a video-installation, the exhibition is a 
visual inquiry into scientific and speculative scenarios of how the 
rapid advancement in the fields of biotechnology, computational imaging 
and artificial intelligence enable transformative applications across a 
broad range of fields such as medicine, agriculture, environmental 
science and research.
 

This exhibition at Fotogalleri Vasli Souza (28.11-22.12.24) is the first iteration of a series of new works 
concerning biotechnology, inspired by lab visits and conversations with 
researchers &#38;amp; scientists working in this field.&#38;nbsp;
The exhibition is kindly supported by: Billedkunstnernes Vederlagsfond and Norsk Fotografisk Fond.

		<description>Pixel Pitch vol. 4 (2023-24)

	Pixel Pitch vol. 4 (2023-24) is the latest addition to the research-based video series Pixel Pitch, that comments specifically on the current state and uncertain trajectories of the global energy economy. Consisting of a montage of documentary images and digitally rendered video clips, this piece is a meditative visual examination of the oil industry and alternative energy futures beyond fossil fuels. The video interlaces image sequences pertaining to the abstract mechanics of energy production, such as industrial landscapes and extraction infrastructure, with clips of organic motifs related to the ecosystems and species that are affected by fossil-fuel extraction, for instance planktons and humans. 

Pixel Pitch vol. 4 (2023-24) explores associative relations between the dark-colored, viscous oil—fueling capital flows—and the energy of the hundreds of millions of years of sun-powered, compressed life that comprise it. The work was created in conjunction with New Visions - Henie Onstad Triennial for Photography and New Media and has been shown in various venues, among others as part of the exhibition&#38;nbsp;Allmenningens tragedie at Jugendstilsenteret og KUBE (Ålesund, NO).

		<description>Dark Sky Sanctuary :: Gjerdrum (2023)

	Dark Sky Sanctuary :: Gjerdrum (2023) is a site specific light and sound installation that reflects upon the phenomenon of artificial light at night and how overexposure to this substance affects plants, animals, people and entire ecosystems. Due to global trends in urbanization, the LED revolution and the subsequent increase in light pollution, two-thirds of Earth`s population live in areas where the Milky Way is no longer visible on a clear night sky. Inspired by this, a temporary dark sky sanctuary has been established in the forest in Gjerdrum municipality (nearby Gardermoen – the international airport serving Oslo). The installation has been part of Landart 2023, and has been available 24/7 during the festival period in the a popular hiking area around Lysdammen. The work itself consisted of various site specific elements, such as the transformation of a “lysløype” – a floodlit ski trail, commonly found in Nordic countries, as well as an interactive light installation and an accompanying sound installation that the public could experience in the forest. In conjunction with this audio-visual piece, a series of guided tours have been arranged, such as a night walk / performative lecture, in collaboration with ecologist Jeroen van der Kooij.&#38;nbsp;

(2021-26) is a visual
essay that explores issues related to
digitalisation, data colonisation, surveillance capitalism and the impact of
computer technology on (human) nature. 


The film brings together visual themes such as the forest as a living biological network, mycorrhiza
(the symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi), the network-like fiber
structures of nanocellulose (used in tissue engineering processes) and fantasies
of neural network development (an emerging field of computer sciences that
powers the development of artificial intelligence). The work is presented as a video installation – projected
on a wall custom-made of industrial grade cellulose.

		<description>Yujiapu Mirage (2020)

Yujiapu Mirage (2020) depicts a highrise building in the city of Tianjin, China, that is brightly lit by architectural LED lighting. The photo was taken with an analogue large format camera by deliberately extending its bellows and pushing the focal length beyond infinity – that resulted in an image completely out of focus. With this gesture I wished to remove all details from the photo and create a generic image – an archetype of the thousands of highrise buildings that have been built in China in the last two decades of unprecedented economic growth. Yujiapu Mirage (2020) is a reflection to this trend as well as an homage to Hiroshi Sugimoto's series Architecture (1997-2002). The photo is printed on semi-transparent material, and displayed in a custom-made LED light box. By using LED lightbox as display, the work becomes a sample of artificial light in the gallery space – creating a bodily experience of being exposed to this type of light.

		<description>Pixel Pitch (2019-ongoing)

Pixel Pitch is a series of immersive, hypnotic video collages displayed on large-format LED screens. This ongoing, research-based project explores the relationship between economics and our environment, with a particular emphasis on light pollution and mankind's complex relationship with energy. The screens, which are approximately human height and lean against the wall, are approachable, yet could also serve as building blocks in large-scale advertising boards—and reference their role in the continuous, global flow of capital. Depending on one’s distance to this type of screen, the visuals it displays fluctuate between being legible as a coherent image and appearing as flickering pixels of artificial light.&#38;nbsp;Compositions of light embodies information yet information might dissolve to fragments light—depending on the spectator’s position.
Pixel Pitch, vol. 1 (2019) is the first piece in this series. The 5:30 minutes long video collage features footage from China, which is the worlds most prolific producer of LEDs and has also the biggest market for this technology, that makes it the largest “playground” for developers of connected architectural LED lighting systems.&#38;nbsp;

Pixel Pitch, vol. 2 (2020) is the latest of the series. It features images related to mankinds increasing energy needs and the universal law of nature: entropy. The video interlaces image sequences pertaining to the abstract mechanics of industrial scale energy production, with clips of human scale motifs related to consumption.

	Yujiapu Dream, Yujiapu Towers (2017)

Yujiapu
is an ambitious large-scale construction project in Tianjin, China.
The district draws inspiration from Manhattan with regards to city
planning, architecture and the iconic skyline. Although the district
was scheduled for completion in 2014, most of the skyscrapers are
still unfinished. The past years have seen a slowdown of construction
activity, some of the sites have become abandoned. When the night
falls, the city gets dark and deserted. It is only street lights and
LED decoration that illuminate the buildings and the smog that is
filling the sky. The colourful haze confuses the white balance
algorithms of the camera, (light)pollution is recorded as colour cast. The
windows are dark, the buildings seem to be “hibernated”, bearing
a resemblance to maquettes. Standing still in a state between idea
and functionality the buildings appears to be idiosyncratic products
of the cult of growth and development.

	Afterimages (2016)


					We moved to our new home in the summer of 1989 — for practical
reasons — on a long weekend at the end of August. It was the same
weekend that the Pan-European Picnic took place on the border of Austria and Hungary. After more than 40 years of division by
the Iron Curtain, the two countries opened up their borders (for a few hours), letting people pass freely, and allowing East German
refugees to flee to West Germany through Austria. The event was
crucial to the Revolutions of 1989, leading to the lifting of the Iron
Curtain and the reunification of Germany three months later. The
only difference I noticed then was that my school was closer to our new
home.Looking at the photograph through a microscopic magnifier, I can clearly see distinguishable clouds of colours, dye clouds of
cyans, magentas, yellows; cluttered groups of grains. (...)

					
How do the meanings of place, distance and belonging shift in
the context of our relativist, constantly changing world? How can
we redefine our sense of place in a progressive and outward looking
way, shift our spatial understanding from points towards vectors
and velocities? Where are our roots? Where are our routes? How would this photograph change if I gave it a title, instead of
Untitled? REAR, VIEW, FEAR, TURN, OPEN, LOOP, FAKE,
MEMO, BLUE, GATE, AXIS, JINX, FADE, WAKE or BIAS? (...) It has become inevitable to work with this picture.

	Parallels (2017-ongoing)


					Parallels is an ongoing photography project that consists of a series of multi-exposed rolls of colour reversal film. Each roll has been exposed two times, in two places (both in Hungary and Norway). The result is a series of multi-layered images – a visual comment on globalisation, migration and mobility. The film rolls contain overlapping, intertwined layers, where single photographs are blended together into a continuous stream of images. The scenes, events and subjects on the photos are no longer separable. Parallels is a reflection on the clash &#38;lt;-&#38;gt; convergence of different ideologies and cultures that people – especially those of us who live away from our homeland – experience every day.
